Laurie Strome Pavilion
Located in Heasley Park in memory of the late Laurie Strome
Welcome to the Laurie Strome Memorial Pavilion, a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable community organizer who dedicated her life to improving the lives of those in the Sunnydale community.

Our Story
During the challenging winters of the pandemic, individuals waiting for food distribution lined up outside the Sunnydale Community Centre, often braving harsh weather conditions. Recognizing the need for a sheltered space, the Lakeshore South Community Association members took action. They envisioned a pavilion that would protect from the elements and serve as a versatile space for family picnics, community events, and various programs. The association raised funds to bring this vision to life.
About Laurie Strome

Laurie Strome was a beloved and long-time resident who spent many years dedicated to the improvement of the Sunnydale community. Her community work began early on, accompanying her mother with a wagon full of games, crafts, and books for the children of Sunnydale. Laurie played a key role in transforming one of the townhouses into a community center, which is still operated by the House of Friendship today, providing weekly food bank distributions.
Laurie’s efforts extended to the creation of a playground in Heasley Park and the organizing of numerous community potlucks and BBQ events. As president of the Sunnydale Community Association, Laurie encouraged neighbours to vote and actively participate in community life. Her contributions were recognized with the prestigious Waterloo Award, the city’s highest honour, and the city’s flags were flown at half-mast the day she passed.
The Pavilion
The Laurie Strome Memorial Pavilion stands as a fitting tribute to Laurie’s legacy, offering a space that embodies her spirit of community and service. Located in Heasley Park, this pavilion provides shelter for those waiting for food, a gathering place for community events, and a space for parents waiting for children at Cedarbrae School and programs run by Adventure for Change.
